Do you know, I just got fired from a strip club gig because, as the manager put it, " I was focusing too much on the music and not enough on focusing the guys' attention on the dancers"? After three nights, I was told that I just wasn't enough of an energetic MC, that I wasn't cracking wise about the dancers (like, "Heeeeeeeeeerrrrrrrre's Gemini--check out the twins on her!" and "oooweee, I wanna dump a load in Mercedes' trunk!"). The ad in the paper has stated, "no experience necessary," and I, a 24-year vet, got fired after three nights?
I got fired from a so-called gentlemen's club for being too much of a gentleman, for not pointing out the finer points about each dancer's snatch! Is that messed up, or what? I'm so aggravated . . .

Re: Strip Clubs
Tue, May 13, 2008 - 11:37 AMProbably better for you in the long run. While the pay may have been alright, they obviously aren't looking for a talented DJ. They want a noisey MC that can be crass and dirty. Doesn't sound like your type of gig. I'd consider myself lucky to not have to be there further if I were you. Brush it off, man. You're better than that scene. -

Re: Strip Clubs
Tue, May 13, 2008 - 8:12 PMI worked at one so-called gentlemen's club for two years, and the reasons for my longevity were 1) my skills and fleixibility--I tailored the brief sets to the music preferences of the dancers onstage, and could beatmix from Journey to Jay-Z to whatever; 2) the dancers liked me--I looked them in the eyes when we talked, and was more concerned that they and the patrons enjoyed the sets than how hot they were; and 3) the manager trusted me to keep the party rockin' and to keep the dancers dancing while seldom doing more on the mic than introducing them.
The stigma is that a DJ who spins at a strip club is only interested in looking at ass, and trying to score, that he's a pig rather than someone who believes everybody who goes out to clubs, regardless the type, deserves artfully presented music. And I guess, now I know why.
I just hate to get fired when I know damn well I'm smart enough, good enough, and people like me, ya know? Then again, no few pub/club/bar owners are aware of when they have a good thing, so que sera, sera.
Just venting. -

Wed, May 14, 2008 - 9:39 AMi think sean & saro nailed it and stewart smalley never had a gig at a strip club.
it's probably the owner and the vibe he wants in his spot--it's obviously not intended to be a classy joint and we've all figured out you're a class-act.
right dj/wrong venue.

Re: Strip Clubs
Tue, May 20, 2008 - 1:28 PMyeah, what sAro said.....they were looking for a loud MC that can press a play button. The term DJ gets so bastardized it's not even funny. When they advertise "no experience necessary" in an ad for a DJ it also means "no brain required" in fact - no brain perferred!
keep going for the gigs that require a skilled DJ with his own style

Re: Strip Clubs
Mon, June 9, 2008 - 6:11 PMStrip Clubs don't want DJ's.
They want a guy with a playlist that can quickly put on Elvis Costello's watching the Detectives in case the gal finds a fadora to fuck around with.
I respect your anger... and you should have quit anyhooo!
