When I had 100's I would get that error with only certin cd's, I think I narowed it down to cd's that were burned on one of those stand alone cd burners... sometimes a power cycle would help, other than that, I would need to rip the audio data off the cd with exact audio copy, and then burn another one

I've had this error message before on certian crisp, scratch-free commerical CDs from top labels. They played fine one Numarks and Denons, but not Pioneer. I don't know what it means.

I've always wondered if cleaning the things would help, now that I have 1000's though, I don;t really run in to that problem, maby I will after years of giging... have you tried putting one of those stupid cd lense cleaners in there?

i live in the countryside and i found out that the error message is connected to the power irregularities...
With a UPS that balanced the power it was working fine.
although there are UPS' that were not sensitive enough to the power changes and the error-message came back.
that was with "Mustek PowerMust 600 offline".
I dont know if that problem exists for any city inhabitants but the CDJs seem to be very sensitive in that matter...

E-8301 is a very generic disc read error, since your getting them on all of the CDs you put in there it sounds like something is preventing the laser from reading the disc, but it isn't significant enough to throw off a mechanical failure message. I'd go ahead and take them in for a checkup, it should be something pretty quick and dirty. If the laser is misaligned you'll get that one too, it's a simple adjustment.

It would make sense for the folks getting the error message related to power issues as well, the laser is going to want to be powered to spec.

Michael, would you mind letting us know how it goes?

I have this issue with one of my 100s. It only happens with certain burned CD-Rs (never with commercial audio CDs). I have seen it enough times to have narrowed it down to certain CD media used to burn music onto.

But I have found a way to get even those CDs to work.... the "Fonzie" approach:

If the "E-8301" comes up, I eject the disc, re-insert it, and then shake the CDJ unit up and down and smack it (not too hard!) on the side a couple times. Not too violent movements... you know, within reason, so nothing mechanical can be broken. I believe the jarring instigates the skip-protection function in the CDJ, and it finds a way to read the CD in its elevated disc-read mode.

That's my theory anyway... I really have no idea what is going on inside that thing.
