Headphones

I used to own a pair of Sony MDR-V700 DJ Headphones. These lasted a couple of years, but eventually the plastic ball joint broke apart, which I soon learned was a design flaw. Next I picked up a pair of Pioneer HDJ-1000 Pro DJ headphones, which served me well for a few years. Last night, during a gig, the plastic cracked and again I own a pair of headphones that will have to been kept together with superglue and duct tape.

I saw that Pioneer released the HDJ-2000s recently, but at quite a price jump. The 1000’s are $170, while the 2000s are $350. They’re sportin’ a magnesium swivel/fold mechanism rather than the plastic, but as it’s still partially plastic, I feel like it’s just going to break somewhere else. Does anyone have experience with these, or are they just too new to have any info about durability.’

What headphones have you had a good long-term experience with? Are headphones just not built to last?

    Hey man,

Ya, I tend to buy another pair of good headphones every 2 or 3 years... they tend to break from lots of use (I listen to headphones at least 2 hours every day for music), dropping them and stuff... (like drunken rages when I lose at a video game level, he he)... I must own like 20 pairs from earbuds to lightweight walkman types to full muffs...

Two things about headphones... bass response and high sound pressure levels... the best bass tends to come from the 50mm drivers (duhh)... but some that may sound GREAT at normal volume, break up at high SPL's... and probably all of us on this tribe love to listen at ear breaking volumes...

No doubt we have to, because we're getting deafer every passing year . . .

You can't go wrong with Sennheiser headphones.

I'm biased because of my former business relationship with Denon, but my favourite 'phones are the Denon DN--HP1000, with a 53mm driver (!) and 3,500 mW of power, and crystal-clear sound. I have three or four pairs . . .

guess i am the lone voice in the wilderness shouting "TURN THAT %$#^ DOWN!!!"

i hate having to listen to things loud in order to hear. i need to be better to my ears, but i think i probably hear better than most djs my age (i.e., i'm not going deaf.)

i'm a fan of sennheisers as well. unfortunately, the *cool* models seem to be discontinued. :(

I will third the Sennheisers. I use the HD-280, and they isolate you from outside noise really well...meaning that you don't have to run them as hard to hear over the music in the environment, thus saving your hearing, at least just a little.

They have held up reasonably well over the last couple of years, although both muffs have come partially unglued. I have yet to attempt a fix, because they still function fine...

The Sony's always break right at the ball and joint. Mine broke within the first 2 months I had them. I've used two zip ties on each side and have been using them as my studio and camping head phone. I really like the clarity of these headphones, but they will break for sure.

I use and Love my Ultrasone Pro 650's they sound so sweet even in the loudest clubs. Their down side is that they are ridiculous expensive. I recall I paid $350 for my set, but I still use them and love them 3 years later.

Sony makes much better DJ 'phones and phones (IMHO) for listening to electronica or any bass-heavy music ... the Senn's are very thin on bass ....they have an elegant non-fatiguing sound but its lacking ...

Get one of the higher- up Sonys like the MDR-V900
        Cheap on ebay !!!!

thanks guys. I just want cheap as dirt really, I am willing to pay... but I know hunting for deals will reap huge benefits. The Senn's are already more today.... so I lost out on an extra $20 savings.

How in *THE HELL* are $250 headphones selling for $40 on ebay? Huh?

yeah... thanks for that. I look at amazon for reviews and then at times vacuously forget that ebay is the biggest fence on the planet.

also keep i mind that the price you LIST at on ebay determines how much you pay in fees. all the experienced ebay folk list at a ridiculously low price to get bidding happening.

I've said it a zillion times in various plages, but take advantage of Guitar Center or other places that offer a performance guarantee. For the last 5 years I've been in new headphones regularly for just the cost of a new guarantee plan (usually 10% of the cost of the item I think). If you guarantee is about to expire..."woops, my cans just broke - OMG!!" Go get your new ones.

Oh, and I love my dennons. The guarantee actually expired on these - 2 years and counting and they still sound and feel great. Only downside is that they are a bit heavy and my balding head shows a dent after I wear them for a while...lol

I also owned a couple pairs of the MDV-700s to have them fall apart on me. They sound great, but even when you "ghetto rig" those headphones, they still never fit the same after that joint breaks. I found a great alternative: The Sony MDR-V6 headphones. They're actually what is used in recording studios and have that great sound you get from the 700s. The best part, at around $80, they're some $30 cheaper than the others. I've had mine now for nearly three years and they still run strong. The only issue I have (and it's rare) is that the ear cushion has a tendency to slip off. But some super glue later and it's fixed.

Sony MDR-V6 Headphones - best pair of headphones I've ever owned.
