Hey all you DJs,

I've burned through 3 mixers is the last year and I want to hear what you think is the best scratch mixer. I'd like to have good sound, very durable for desert parties, and have a crossover that doesn't fade out.

Let's hear from ya

Cheers

3-6-8-10-12 beats?

I am playing with a flamenco guitarist and am prolly nowhere near talented enough... but was wondering if you could provide some insight or solid beats for the following:
================================================
My type of flamenco guitar quite often wants to be Doce Compas. A 12 count rhythm accenting 3-6-8-10-12 use these for deep pulsating sub bass underlying my guitar.

Otherwise tempo change are common but the 3-6-8-10-12 keeps going on.
==================================================

I have some ideas, but wanted to know if anyone might have some suggestions?

Strip Clubs

Do you know, I just got fired from a strip club gig because, as the manager put it, " I was focusing too much on the music and not enough on focusing the guys' attention on the dancers"? After three nights, I was told that I just wasn't enough of an energetic MC, that I wasn't cracking wise about the dancers (like, "Heeeeeeeeeerrrrrrrre's Gemini--check out the twins on her!" and "oooweee, I wanna dump a load in Mercedes' trunk!"). The ad in the paper has stated, "no experience necessary," and I, a 24-year vet, got fired after three nights?

I got fired from a so-called gentlemen's club for being too much of a gentleman, for not pointing out the finer points about each dancer's snatch! Is that messed up, or what? I'm so aggravated . . .

i am really proud to present the first part of my mega Psychedelic Trance mix

the first part, is a Prelude (musical forplay) of whats comming. it is like the early dawn of the day that lies ahead.
all tracks i use in this mix are my own personal choice.

i solely selected on feeling, on what music does to me when i listen to it. Music is emotion..

SL-1200 Tonearm Calibration

I was playing used records at work today, and while I was listening to what were some obviously well played vintage soul records, it was bugging me that so many records get screwed up when they really don't have to, so after I ate dinner I wrote a blog about calibrating one's tonearm.

I admit this is not for purely altruistic purposes. I want more used records to come through my hands that are not all fucked up! :)
Hector Cardenas
International DJ, innovative producer, founder and front man of one of the world's most legendary party organizations: FunkyTekno Tribe (FTT) and Organic. -DJ Hector Cardenas has emerged as a pioneering force in the house music scene and has continued to be instrumental in the proliferation of dance music on a global scale. Hector Cardenas' versitility as a DJ is second to none, applying his own unique and highly sophisticated stlye to all aspects of dance, ranging from future house and funky tekno to hip-house mash-ups and jazzy grooves. Starting out as a club DJ in 1989, Hector eventually joined forces with founding co-partners Kevon Banks and Jerry Sladewski in 1992 to form FTT just as the burgeoning underground rave scene was exploding along California's sunny shores. Firmly establishing himself as an FTT resident DJ, Hector has played at some of the worlds hottest clubs and has shared the stage with many of the world's premier electronic music artists such as DJ Sneak, Junior Sanchez, Mark Farina, DJ Dan, Daft Punk and The Basement Jaxx to name a few. After years of great success touring and producing parties with the FTT crew, Hector now spends a lot of his time traveling and playing the international club circuit as well as playing residency at clubs in the San Francisco Bay Area. Recently, Hector has toured Amsterdam, South Africa, the Domincan Republic and Mexico and is now looking foward to spending more time in the studio honing his recording and re-mixing skills. found this plain layout

Easily Influenced
Gelly Kusuma and Mikey Velazquez
Together, Mikey and Gelly both launched the self-coined "HAWT Movement" in February of 2006 in Los Angeles, California. Best friends united by their relentless passion for music, they set out to change the way that people looked at house music, parties, and just having fun in general. "At first we just wanted to start a record label in order to showcase our own music, meanwhile having the opportunity to sign our favorite artists that we admire", says Mikey. "Along with that came the party, and that's what really put us on the map and opened up doors to gradually build relationships that will forever change our lives".

In May of 2006, HAWT Afterhours was born. On every 1st and 3rd Friday since the inception, HAWT's underground parties have not only showcased the DJ talent of various quality acts from all over the world, such as Inland Knights, Justin Long, Johnny Fiasco and many more, but they have also displayed the talent of so many of the great DJ's in the local scene. "We always looked back to the beginnning, before we ever had a gig and knew that this was an important step, something that people needed and appreciated", says Gelly. "Overall, the main focus has always been on bringing back that old school house vibe at parties, bringing friends together with music, and just breaking boundaries and having FUN", according to Mikey. HAWT also stands for "Having A Wonderful Time", and they have done just that with the help of Eddie Barajas, Mike Magana, and many more along the way.

Keep an eye out for original music and remixes by EASILY INFLUENCED, which has been getting played by many world class acts such as Derrick Carter, Justin Long, Phil Weeks, DJ Mes, Natural Rhythm, Ricardo Rae, etc. "We think our versatility will surprise people. We really do love it all, and that will become evident in our music the longer and longer we do this", said Gelly. He continues, "we want our style to basically be versatility, and never want to hold anything back. If we're feeling something, whatever sound or style that may be, we make it."

Bykowski
"Isolation is the gift. All the others are a test of your endurance. Of how much you really want to do it. And you'll do it, despite rejection in the worst odds. And it will be better than anything else you can imagine. If you're going to try, go all the way. There is no other feeling like that. You will be alone with the gods. And the nights will flame with fire. You will ride life straight to perfect laughter. It's the only good fight there is." -Charles Bukowski"

Jack Monforte
In the beginning there was Jack...or so the story goes.
Jack "Freedom" Monforte has been spinning for over two decades now.
An underground fixture since the late eighties, he joined forces with two other promoters
in the early nineties to create Sweet Sundays.
Shortly thereafter he moved to Alaska, where he saw an opportunity to bring the underground techno scene to virgin territory, today Jack is considered one of the pioneers of the Alaskan electronic scene.
Moving back to Los Angeles in the mid nineties saw Jack earn a residency at
Club Diva where he opened up for Richard Vission and live acts like,
Rozalla, Donna Blakely, Alyus, Bad Boy Bill,etc...
In the early part of 2001 Jack along with partner K.C. Santana created Soulplanet Sessions.
a place where musicians,Djs and dancers could come together and create magic.
Soulplanet Sessions has hosted the likes of Marlon D,Master Kev, Tony Powell, Wayne Lyons and numerous other DJs.
Apart from being a producer/ DJ, his other passion is Graffiti art and photography.
Jack's appearances have included...Dirty Dirty House Club, The Clinic, Faith after-hours, Inspiration, Therapy (FTWK), Movin, Union Square Lounge (NYC), The End Up (San Francisco) and countless one offs.
From spinning hip hop to the most soulful garage house music, Jack is
constantly looking for the perfect beat.

Some people suggested that I give some information about what I do so here I go. I go to grad school for international development and my major is human security. I focus on human trafficking and plan to pursue a career in that field once I graduate. I am currently volunteering for this organization and will be interning with them over the summer. They have a very small staff but are trying to expand. I have planned this event with the help of my boyfriend and 100% of the ticket sales go directly to the organization. Myself and the DJs are doing this soley to raise money for this cause. Now some info on human trafficking:

The trafficking of human beings is the recruitment, transportation, harbouring, or receipt of people for the purpose of exploitation. It is estimated to be a $5 to $9 billion-a-year industry. Trafficking victims typically are recruited using coercion, deception, fraud, the abuse of power, or outright abduction. Threats, violence, and economic leverage can often make a victim consent to exploitation.

Exploitation includes forcing people into prostitution or other forms of sexual exploitation, forced labour or services, slavery or practices similar to slavery, servitude or the removal of organs. For children, exploitation may also include forced prostitution, illicit international adoption, trafficking for early marriage, or recruitment as child soldiers, beggars, or for religious cults.

I'd be more than happy to supply anyone with more information upon request. I don't want to write a book on here.

Hey, DJs

So aside from MixMag and Remix, what other good magazines or blogs are out there today for reading about DJ culture and clubs and favorite producers, etc?

Where do you go online to keep tabs on people in the mix?

I'm working on a little project at the moment and would love any feedback.

Thanks!

Looking for new DJ mixes to post...

Thanks for letting me in the tribe. I can't wait to meet some of you... But first, I need some new mixes to post.....

My podcast needs some new flavor! I try and post 4 mixes a week when I'm not wasting away in a cubicle... I choose based on ability to mix, not genre.

Since January 2007, the podcast has been downloaded 12,000 times. There are no ads and nothing is for sale. Just music to listen to .... I do this so my friends who have day jobs can listen to new commercial free electronic music every week. I also do this to help promote people who can mix well. Most mixes I get are sitting on someones hard-drive collecting digital dust when there are people out there dying for new stuff.

http://podcast.goodbeats.com

If you want to be a part of it, please send me a message with a link (to an online MP3 mix that is less than 100 MB) and I will review it to post. The average mix is downloaded 75 times. The most downloads we have for a single mix is 365 and counting.

Hey all!

I'm selling some DJ equipment. I'd prefer to keep it to someone in the bay area so we don't have to deal with shipping, but I'm open.

I have a practically brand new pair of Pioneer CDJ-800s. I'm selling each for $400 or the pair for $750 or best offer. You can see my posting (w/pic) on craigslist at: http://sfbay.craigslist.org/sfc/ele/610988223.html

I'm also selling a Vestax PCV-275 3 channel mixer for $150. You can see that posting (w/pic) at: http://sfbay.craigslist.org/sfc/ele/610991214.html

Please respond to me via Tribe if you are interested! Thanks!

Generator Power Question

I’m looking to pick up an outdoor generator for my music equipment and I’m trying to figure out how much power I will need. Speakers are active, 2 EV Sx100s (50+150W amps in each) and a Mackie 1801 active sub (900W amp). Plus the other little accoutrements, decks + laptop. How does the rated power of the speaker amps relate to the total draw to the generator. Do I just add them all up or is it more complicated. Do you think a Honda EU2000 would be sufficient for this rig?

Thanks,
Andrew

Does anyone still sell Vinyl in SF???

Hi all,

So I took a little time off from buying wax (long story) & now that I'm in the market to buy some new platters, I've discovered that the stores I know of have all either closed or started sucking worse than before. Does anyone know of any places in the SF area that still stock a good selection of current tunes on vinyl?

Thanx

Numark Sucks story

So

A couple months ago, I was getting ready to purchase a CD Deck to add to my array of DJ Pro audio gear. Since I am very familiar with PCDJ Red and using MP3s I wanted a tried and tested CD deck that would BE ROCK SOLID, conform to the club “standards”, play MP3s, scratch like vinyl, and NOT FEEL LIKE a CD deck (you know what I mean).

I looked at the Denon 5000, Technics SL DZ 1200, Pioneer CDJ1000, and Numark CDX.

I went down to my Local Pro Audio Store (Ahh My heaven!!!) and spent 30 minutes on each one. I configured them to mix between two different decks (trust me the sales people were looking at me weird) and I spent 2 different days reviewing two decks at a time. That’s’ my kind of shopping 

My initial thought of all the systems varied from “WOW this is cool” to “ man this is lame”. I thought the Denon 5000’s have a ton of options of effects, pitch control, bpm settings, start, stop, but the spinning disk felt really cheep and it really feels like a CD player

. I thought the Pioneer CDJ1000 was nice and clean. Had all the basic CD controls. It had a couple neat features, all the buttons felt solid, scratching was OK, but I didn’t like the fact that the platter didn’t spin and it cost about $1200. (That’s pretty expensive for a CD deck I thought)

My first thought of the Numark CDX was. THIS IS AWESOME!!!. The Numark CDX is sooo Cool. This thing has it all. The Spinning platter with a real vinyl feels so real and the scratching is right on. Then the looping is perfect. You can set a 4 beat loop and then double it, ½ it, ¼, 1/8, … It sets the loops right on the beat and you tap the beat in. Really cool. And then the effects are really nice. As a DJ you never want to rely on effects or over use them, but these sound very clean and could defiantly add to a set. All this and for > $700.

I thought the Technics SL DZ 1200, were really nice. The platter feels very much like it sl 1200 turntable sister, but with a 10 inch disk. They look really cool and they have lots of nice features. These are very expensive and I wasn’t going to be able to get any $$$ taken of the “out the door cost” .

I thought long and hard about which one I was going to purchase and the decision came down to the Numark CDX. I was so excited to get one of these in my house and in my sets.

So first I looked on line to find the best price. Call me stupid, but I found a used CDX online for $400. The guy swore that it was in “NEW” condition, but when it arrived I could tell it had seen better days. It started up, it played a CD, but 2 minutes after the platter stared spinning it died and the platter stopped. Sounded like the record was running really slow and then I couldn’t start up again until you actually spun up the record. I checked all the setting for start and stop speeds but the motor was shot. I spoke with technical support and they said the motor was burned out. I’ve had my Technics for 10 years and never ever an issue with the motor. I got lucky and returned it to the guy cash back and all.

Then I decided I better get a brand new one. It was going to cost me about $700, but I guess its worth it to get working one. The second one I got was brand new and it had a major failure. The CD would stop playing or started skipping after 1 hour of play. That’s right you could only play CDs for 1 hour. I was having a party and the stupid thing stopped playing. So I returned it and got a third unit but this one would keep my CDs. That’s right it would play a CD, but it wouldn’t eject the CD.

I was so pissed off. I went back down to my local Pro Audio Store and these guys were so cool. That’s why I do so much business with them, they stand behind their products. I read all kinds of postings online about the CDX and I found out everyone is having the same problems with them. The CD decks are cheep and the Motors burnout .

Numark blew it. It seemed so cool, but just sucks.

I finally decided that like the Technns SL1200s the Pioneer CDJ1000 is the industry standard for a good reason and that’s because they WORK. I now own the CDJ1000 and found them to be bulletproof. Once you get used to them they work really nice. The scratching is right on. I’m still disappointed about the looping. They are hard to set a loop and keep the BPM right on with the song I’m mixing in. They don’t play MP3s or Wav files, but they work.

Has anyone else had similar experiences with Numark? Why are the such a shitty Pro Audio manufacture with good ideas that go bad?

I need something low cost, easily accessible and feasible for a dj rig to keep the needles from bouncing

one suggestion was foam, cut in circles to go under the vinyl, that sounds good

any more suggestions?

hi. i'm new here. I'm working on an art/music project featuring adult female orgasms. Girls call in and leave voice messages and I mix them into music.

I think it would sound good in some clubs.. If you want to play any of the pieces on http://explicious.com/ that's cool. The Music is Free.

I have a backlog of voice messages to go through and the phone is ringing off the hook... I'm working on some more 'dance' kind of tunes.

Have a wonderful day.

Seeking DJ's for Spin Jam!

Heya Peeps,

I am the humble hostess of a community Spin Jam in San Francisco. We get together and play with our toys every 2nd and 4th Mondays at City Dance Studios. (Toys being hula hoops, poi, staff, juggling etc. ) 9:00-12:00.

We are ALWAYS looking for a DJ. We have a great crowd. Low attitude, high GRATITUDE!

We want you to come out and test your set, try that mix that you have always wanted to...and play what makes you smile.

The event is by donation, and we usually do well enough to tip the DJ.

We don't have decks...there is a sound system there. We always seem to rally what we need. It is a really good energy event.

Contact me and let me know if you would like to come out and play for a happy crowd!

Check out the google group spinjamsf for more info.

Many Happy Thoughts from your humble servant of Spintasticness

I've been dee-jay-ing and collecting records for over 20 years. I just started putting some of my mixes up at my website djphosh.com. These first few files are mixed rough & live. I've been out of the music scene for too long, now I'm back. I'll be posting all kinds of great music for down load at my site.

Thanks

High,
I'm wondering what people (Mac users) are using to record dj mixes {and set track marks when done} ?
I've been using SOUNDFORGE 5 on an old PC that I had for the last years and that worked great {though I couldn't set track marks}
and am wondering what could be recommended as a substitute. Any help is much appreciated!

Workshop: Website Tools and Marketing Strategies! Saturday, February 9th

Lady Jay says:
United Divas is working with Social Creature to present our first workshop for creative entrepeneurs. If you are at that place where you are trying to figure out how to make your website work for you and attract more visitors who return more than once, this is just what you need. This won't design your website for you, but you will walk away knowing exactly what you need to do in order to make it happen. After years and years of friends asking both of us these questions, we realized that a workshop would be the best way to provide answers at a price much more reasonable than a one-on-one consultation. So, two thumbs up from me, especially if you are one of the people who hits me up regularly on ways to improve your business and online presence.

Jenka says:

Dear Friends,

It is a pleasure to announce that I will be leading a workshop on February 9th to help creative professionals make more effective websites.

After working on scores of websites, I've noticed that musicians, artists, and creative entreprenuers in general tend to share the same requirements for an effective website, and very often make the same mistakes when creating one. Many folks have approached me for advice on how they can enhance or improve their sites, and so it's with great excitement that I have decided to do a workshop to share my insight and expertise. My goal is to make sure attendees gain an understanding of the options, strategies, and resources at their disposal for creating an online presence that will help move their business forward, and leave ready to start implementing them right away.

More information on the workshop and tickets can be found at:
www.social-creature.com/workshop <www.social-creature.com/workshop>

Feel free to pass this on to anyone you think would benefit from the information.

I look forward to seeing you on February 9th!

All the best,

~Jenka

new member... Top album of the year..... first submission and about dreaded requests....

a guy named Cutter from JH taught me a trick.

Put out a clipboard that says requests. Let someone write it down. When they come back in an hour, you say "almost there, just four more"

It is, of course, ALWAYS four more... and having the clipboard makes it so you don't have to pretend you can't hear, etc.....

I love those times I pretend I am the most focused DJ on the planet, simply not to hear someone asking for a mashup of "Dick in the Box"

Hello all.

My album of the year was Burial's Untrue..... yours?

Empath/P&G Fader advice

okay so I have a mucky fader from scratching a lot on one side and I'm broke - I know the PG faders are only supposed to be used with a certain lubricant, but I used to use tuner control spray on regular faders - my Q's are thus:

1) has anyone used regular radio shack style lube on a Penny & Giles fader and if so, what were the results?

2) since the faders are interchangable on the mixer, should I just take it apart and swap out the middle channel (which is only for AUX sources anyway usually) with the x-fader? anyone done it? they have instructions on how to do it but I've never attempted it.

which audio interface to use with Ableton Live

I have Ableton Live running on my Windows laptop, and I want to give laptop DJ-ing a try.

I need to get an audio interface, but I'm not sure what to get.

Ideally I'd like an audio interface that gives me the same functionality as a DJ mixer. Specifically, I want to be able to play 2 clips at a time, and for each clip I'd like these 3 things:
- a button that toggles whether the clip is being sent to the headphones or not
- a vertical slider or twist knob that controls overall volume
- 3 twist knobs to control a 3-band eq

I want all of the above features and don't want to spend a ton of money on other features that I probably won't use.

Any recommendations?

Thanks!
-Mike

The New Denon DN-HC4500 With Reflex by PCDJ

Denon DN-HC4500
The professional PC/MAC compatible controller DN-HC4500 now combines unmatched hardware performance with internal high quality audio processing offering low latency ASIO/OSX audio support. The DN-HC4500 does more than talk Midi it offers the exclusive flexibility to control DENONs optional BU4500 dual CD/MP3 player for simultaneous 4-player configuration. The controller is bundled & complimented with an LE (Ligh Edition) version of PCDJs revolutionary new software, Reflex, that offers an array of amazing forward thinking features. Shot live at the DJ Times DJ Expo Aug.13, 2007 Check out the DJNN video here [ http://www.djnn.com/djtimes.htm ]!

Includes software LE Version of Reflex by PCDJ
--DN-HC4500 & Reflex both support PC/MAC platforms
--Fully compatible and pre-mapped for DN-HC4500; just Plug & Play

24-Bit Processing & USB Audio
Unlike most DJ midi controllers that are only USB bus powered, the DN-HC4500 encompasses its own internal power supply to achieve the highest electrical specifications, resulting in best possible performance. The DN-HC4500 features industry leading Burr Brown (a product of TI) 24 bit DAC processing for superior output audio quality. USB audio interface includes 2-Channel stereo output pair. 44.1/48/96kHz sampling ranges and low latency ASIO/OSX audio support, helping to prevent the common issues many users experienced when streaming audio from PC files.

BU4500 Drive Support
The sold separately and optional BU4500 dual CD/MP3 player [ http://denondj.com/prodview_item.asp?pid=66&cid=6 ] allows DJs to continue playing from their CD collection (whenever required) while still controlling your favorite DJ software. Just select the SOURCE button on either deck to switch over to CD playback seamlessly. This clever combo system makes the DN-HC4500 the most powerful and flexible DJ hardware controller on the planet. In addition, current Denon DN-D4500 / DN-D4000 owners are welcome to enjoy all these benefits by purchasing the DN-HC4500 and upgrading a system to be computer performance ready.

Multi Functional Touch Sensitive Jog Disc
The 70mm JOG Disc is con-structed with an ultra high-resolution pulse and touch sensor to accurately reproduce the most subtle or swift scratching movements made by the human hand. Of course, the Jog Disc can be mapped to perform other vital functions too such as, pitch bending, scanning, file searching and dry/wet control for effects.

Fluorescent Display (w/ 2-line Character Text Support)
Another unique quality of the DN-HC4500 is its informative & animated tube display. The display offers two lines of character information to quickly navigate through your files, folders and confirms you loaded the correct file without having to look up at your monitor. A visual 32-position Marker Point indicator follows your hand movements at lighting speeds without drift. Other indicators include Looping, Hot Starts, BPM info, Elapsed/Remain Time, MP3/WAV file types, and other useable indicators.

Highly Responsive Soft Rubber Buttons, Switches & Knobs
--5 easily accessible function keys at top of each deck
--45 mm Pitch Sliders for fine adjustments
--Vibrant CUE/PLAY button illumination
--2 level illumination of certain buttons
--Multi color illumination of certain buttons for layering functions
--Parameter Knob, Range, Sync, Playlist, Back, Fast Search and other keys for configuration

Need advice for mixer

I'm in the market for a new mixer, and I'm wonder if you guys wouldn't mind sharing personal experiences and reviews of a few mixers. I need something with AT LEAST 3 channels, the rest is completely optional but effects/looping is something I'll consider, as well as other unique features. Right now I'm looking at getting the Denon x1500s, it's a really great design, I've used it a couple of times and love the way it's set up, the input matrix is brilliant. From what I hear the audio quality of it is good, but I've only really heard that from anonymous internet 'reviews' no doubt paid for by DenonDJ.

Other mixers I've considered are the Pioneer djm600, which seems to be basically the same as the x1500s, with less features and a more confusing and difficult effects processor, not to mention being roughly $300 more. I'm also considering the A&H xone62, but that one's more expensive than I'd like to pay, and it seems to be more suited to house and trance music than what I spin: primarily drum & bass. I looked also at the Rane Empath, but that one's also fairly expensive, and doesn't seem to have any features that make it stand out.

Any input anyone could give regarding sound quality, durability, or anything else I haven't covered (or covered incompletely) would be really appreciated.

Thanks so much :D
